Survey published by Expedia lists Cape Verde

Investors to benefit from ongoing tourism boom in Cape Verde

Irish Investors considering purchasing property in Cape Verde stand to benefit from the growing popularity of the archipelago of tropical islands as a holiday destination. Results of a new survey, conducted by Expedia.co.uk, reveal that Cape Verde is one of the top ten holiday hotspots for 2007, as voted for by Expedia customers. This is the first time that Cape Verde has featured on the annual listing.

The results of the survey by Expedia complement official government figures presented to the Cape Verde Parliament which showed that the country's tourism sector grew 25 percent between 2000 and 2005, helping to invigorate the archipelago's economy. According to the report, tourism accounted for 10.4 percent of Cape Verde's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2005, a rise of 3.4 percentage points over figures from 2000.

Additional data from the Government showed that Cape Verde welcomed approximately 230,000 visitors in 2005, roughly four times the number of people to visit these beautiful islands in 2000, providing further evidence of the archipelago's emergence as a tourist destination for visits from Europe, North America and South Africa.

Speaking about the results of the survey, Tom Sheehy, Director of Cork-based Cape Verde Development said "Last year,we launched the Murdeira Beach Resort, a five-star resort on the Island of Sal. In 2005 we launched Paradise Beach, our first major resort in Cape Verde. On both occasions, we advised investors that the tourist potential for Cape Verde was enormous, and that growth in visitor numbers could clearly be seen on the ground. The results of the survey by Expedia are further testament to the enormous potential that exists for Irish investors who decide to invest in Cape Verde.

"What makes Cape Verde stand out for many investors is the planned and systematic way in which the Government in Cape Verde are going about developing the tourism market while ensuring the preservation of the unique natural beauty of the islands. This careful approach to planning has ensured that Cape Verde has become a highly-attractive holiday and holiday home destination, which won't face the overdevelopment burdens that have impacted other locations in the last 30 years."
